It seems lately that the DIY solar power installation projects are getting easier by the day. This is a good thing for us because the more common and everyday that solar panels become then the more people are actually using it.

There are all kinds of books and guides out there that claim to teach you how to set up your own solar power system. Most of these seem to be decent guides and have some good information in them even if their sales page can be a little misleading. Claims on the websites that you can be ready to go for $200 are not exactly correct.

Sure if you want to build your own solar panel you could probably do it for that price. You are not going to power your house with one panel though. You are also not going to buy the inverters, batteries, and other items that you need to get the system up and running.

One of the best things that I have heard about solar recently is that Lowes will begin carrying solar panels in their stores. It is of course starting on the west coast but hopefully will start spreading through the country quickly. I hope that soon we will see other stores start to take up this trend and drive the prices down even farther.

While these panels are becoming available in stores now and that makes it easier for us to do things ourselves we do need to keep in mind how dangerous electricity is. Before you start tying this stuff in with your houses wiring it would be best to get a real electrician and make sure that you have all of the proper permits.

One of the ways that many people are wanting to use to save money on their solar panels is by building panels themselves. Doing this does save some money but it has some drawbacks as well. For one thing it takes up a lot of your time. So one thing you have to decide is how much your time is worth. For another panels that you build yourself will not have any warranty and may not qualify for the government rebates in your state.

I am not saying that you should not build your own panels. I am just saying to do your research before you get too much time in it and find out you just lost a huge tax break. Any direction that you decide to take in making your household more green is the right one anyway. The whole country is not going to do this all at once. It is going to come from individuals slowly taking steps on their own to change the way they live.
