Going on a RV trip for the weekend is a great way to spend time together with the family. You’ll get to experience the joy of the open road and forget the stress of your daily lives.
In actual fact, the power required for an RV is not very high. Nonetheless, if you want to bring along some of the comfort of home such as television, computer, PlayStation, microwave oven etc, the load on the battery can be quite substantial.
To meet the demand, some RV campsites have electrical connections that you can plug-in. However, the cost of electricity can add up quite quickly if you were to spend a couple of days or longer on the site.
There are RV solar panel kits available on the market which you can buy and install on your vehicle. However, a 330 watt solar kit can cost upwards of $2,700! Most RV owners would not want to spend that kind of money.
Alternatively, you can make the solar kit for your RV via a Do It Yourself (DIY) approach. As a matter of fact, if you can read wiring diagram and solder two wires together, you will be able to build the solar system.
The key components of a homemade RV solar system are the solar panels, charge controller, battery bank and power inverter. The solar panels can be built by soldering 36 pieces of Photovoltaic (PV) cells together.
The electric current generated by the panels will be directed to the charge controller which will use it to charge the deep cycle batteries. Since the batteries can only stored Direct Current (DC), you will need the power inverter to change the DC to Alternate Current (AC).
With AC power, you can now use it to run all of the electrical equipment you’ve brought from home in your RV.
