If everybody did this to save some money, the government would just start charging taxes for sunlight
Imagine if we had solar panels on just half the roof tops in America. We wouldn’t need power plants anymore! The sun shines on most of the continental US most of the time so, a nation-wide power grid would get all the energy it needs all year long just from sunshine.
